Raised Bed Gardening: “MarketMore” Cucumbers!
This is the second year we are growing the variety “MarketMore” cucumbers in the garden; and the first year we’re using an arched trellis to grow the vines.
The trellis was created from a single hog panel, and the arch was formed over the space between the ends of two raised beds.
In another raised bed, the cucumber vines are allowed to grow over the side (about 2 1/2 feet tall).
Seen behind the cucumber vines are tomatoes and eggplants.
There are about 30 plants total. So far this year, we have canned 30 quarts and 2 gallons of pickles.
The heavy, flooding rains from earlier in the Spring would have drowned our in-ground cucumbers, but these raised beds drained very well. We have, unfortunately had vine damage due to insects, snails and slugs, and powdery mildew. Now that the vines are recovering and “greening up”, the heat is also increasing and cucumber production will stop soon.
